The Headmaster of Ardvreck asked us to do an Australia day assembly.

We planned and organised until it was perfect – um, actually, it was pretty last minute! Anyway, it went really well. We had a powerpoint presentation and talked about a little bit of history behind Australia day, and everything that Australia day is to us.

Australia day assembly

We talked about being true blue, and what this means. To show this, we got the kids to sing Waltzing Matilda. And guess what? They actually knew it! They sang it so well. Not like back in oz. Their voices seemed almost angelic. I felt like a bogan singing it up on stage. Then I invited two of the senior boys up to the stage, and they helped me lead the assembly in a chant of  ‘Aussie Aussie Aussie!’. The kids loved that as well.

Australia day 2

As the grand finale, we had a vegemite eating competition! We spread vegemite on toast and got 10 volunteers (7 kids, 2 teachers – and the headmaster), to stuff their faces with vegemite on toast! It was so funny. They all hated it! Ha ha. We did give them prizes though. Little ‘I heart Australia’ koala key rings. We also had a reporter come from the local newpaper to do a bit of a fill in story about us. Here’s the pic that may/may not appear.
